Why did natural deodorant always seem to require a compromise

One formula controls odor but leaves your underarms feeling angry. Another feels gentle but has you checking yourself before lunch.

We wanted the middle that should not be so hard to find: a real odor-control system, no baking soda, a smooth swipe, and complete honesty about what deodorant can and cannot do.

Three ingredients. Three specific jobs.

Magnesium Hydroxide

HELPS NEUTRALIZE ODOR. It helps manage the conditions that make underarm odor more noticeable, without relying on baking soda.

Zinc Ricinoleate

BINDS ODOR MOLECULES. Rather than merely covering odor with perfume, zinc ricinoleate helps capture malodor and reduce how strongly it is perceived.

Arrowroot Powder

ABSORBS EXCESS SURFACE MOISTURE. Arrowroot helps with dampness at the skin’s surface. It does not block perspiration or turn the formula into an antiperspirant.

It spreads like a dry oil — no drag, no pulling at the eye area. Four to five pumps covers a whole face, which is less than most people expect the first time. What it doesn't do is foam. There's no surfactant in the bottle to make it.

Why this exists

My daughter was seven and she needed deodorant.

I started making this because of her. She was seven, she needed something, and I read the labels on what was available and I couldn't put any of it on her in good conscience.

The clean ones weren't better. Almost all of them had baking soda in them, and baking soda has always irritated my armpits. So for years I just didn't wear deodorant. I don't tend to be a very stinky person and it was easier to go without than to keep buying things that hurt.

Then I had a kid who needed one, and going without stopped being an option.

I got it wrong for a long time. I'd pour a batch, it would come out cracked or greasy or it wouldn't hold, and I'd hand it to friends and family who are brutally honest with me, and they'd tell me. Releasing this has honestly felt vulnerable. I still catch myself asking whether it's fully ready.

It is. It just took longer than I wanted it to.

Hi there!! I'm down to my last bit of the sample deodorants from a little while back and I have been LOVING IT. At this point I am scraping the last bits of it to be able to use all of it because I find it that amazing. I also recently had to start using my regular deodorant and can already immediately tell that it's just not sure as well as the merigold one and was wondering if you were planning on selling the deodorants online anytime soon? However if you decided you did not want to sell them online I would love to purchase whatever test batches were left (if there were any!) | know this is a long shot but I figured I'd email in case! Thank you so much, I love the brand and the products!

A little bit ago I had gotten to try a sample of your test batch deodorant. I forgot to get back to the email requesting a response and leave a review. I loved it. It is so hard to find clean deodorants without harmful ingredients that keep you smelling fresh without something being slightly off like the scent, texture of product, or the length of time it lasts without having to reapply, etc. That being said I am wondering when that product will be available for purchase? I would love to buy more.

What happens after you put it on

There are no emulsifiers or PEGs in this formula, so it doesn't turn milky and it doesn't rinse away under running water. It comes off on a warm cloth. Here is what happens in between.

  1. First

It goes on creamy, not chalky

Soft against skin instead of dragging.

  2. Then

    Arrowroot takes the surface moisture

Not blocking anything. Just absorbing what's on the skin so the finish is dry instead of slick.

  3. What's Left

    Zinc holds the odor molecules

This is the part that runs all day. Nothing is being neutralized or scented over. It's held.

It's a deodorant. It is not an antiperspirant.

You will still sweat. That is not a formulation gap, it's the category. Anything that reduces how much you sweat is a regulated drug and it works by plugging the duct with an aluminum salt. That is the thing you left. We are not quietly selling it back to you under a nicer label.

What this does is handle the smell. Two different jobs that got sold as one job for about sixty years.

If wetness is your actual problem and not odor, be honest with yourself about that. This isn't the product.

There is no detox. Your underarm is not storing anything and there is nothing in there to draw out with clay for a week. What is real: if you're coming off an antiperspirant, you may sweat more for a stretch while your ducts stop being plugged, and you may notice more odor during that window. That's a normal adjustment and it settles. It is not a cleanse, it is not a sign anything is working, and it isn't a reason to buy a second product from us.

Merigold may be your deodorant if…

Baking soda and your underarms are no longer friends

You want a formula that takes odor seriously without relying on baking soda.

You want odor control, not blocked sweat

You are comfortable perspiring normally and want help managing odor and surface moisture.

You cannot stand chalky natural-deodorant texture

You want a creamy stick that glides rather than drags, crumbles, or feels gritty.

You want your deodorant to feel like body care

The scent, application, and ritual matter to you as much as the free-from list.

    The Glide Matters

Creamy, not chalky. Smooth, not gritty.

A deodorant can have the right ingredient list and still be miserable to use.

Caprylic/capric triglyceride and coco-caprylate/caprate help the stick glide. Meadowfoam seed oil and shea butter cushion the skin. Candelilla wax and cetyl alcohol give the formula structure.

The result is a smooth, creamy application designed to leave the grit behind.

We Never Use Ingredients We Can't Explain

Every oil in our deodorant job. Here are the ones doing the most.

    Zinc Ricinoleate

    traps odor

Derived from castor oil. Binds odor compounds rather than covering them with fragrance or attacking what produces them. The workhorse.

    Magnesium Hydroxide

    works without baking soda

A mineral that occupies the same role sodium bicarbonate does in most natural deodorant. In the formula precisely so baking soda doesn't have to be.

    Meadowfoam

    the glide

Unusually stable, which is why the stick doesn't go off. It's the reason this feels like a balm rather than a chalk stick.

    Coconut Oil (Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride)
    Meadowfoam Seed Oil (Limnanthes alba)
    Arrowroot Powder (Maranta arundinacea)
    Magnesium Hydroxide
    Zinc Ricinoleate
    Candelilla Wax (Euphorbia cerifera)
    Shea Butter (Butyrospermum parkii)
    Cetyl Alcohol
    Triethyl Citrate
    Coco-Caprylate/Caprate,
    Essential Oils
    Vitamin E (Tocopherol)

Eleven things. No aluminum, no baking soda, no parabens, no phthalates, and no preservatives, because there is no water in the formula for anything to grow in.

Your deodorant should stay close, not enter the room before you do.

    1. Neroli Blossom

Soft white floral with a lift of citrus. Sits close to the skin, a little romantic, never loud.

    2. Lavender Eucalyptus

Lavender and cool eucalyptus. Clean and quietly refreshing. Unfussy, settles in for the day.

    3. Wild Bergamot

Bergamot and sweet orange with a green, herbal edge of geranium. Bright, never sweet.

    4. Woodlands

Cedar grounding bergamot and frankincense. Earthy and steady, like a slow walk through morning wood

    How it compares

This is about format, not quality. It's here so you can tell whether this is the kind of cleanser you want.

A cleansing balm from a good brand is a good product. We lose the rinse-off row on purpose, that's the honest trade for a formula with nothing in it but the cleanest ingredients.

    Before you buy

Will it actually work all day?

That's the whole design intent, with zinc holding odor and triethyl citrate slowing the reaction underneath it. But bodies genuinely differ, and we don't have a clinical study, so we're not going to hand you a percentage we made up. First batches are small partly so we hear from real people quickly.

    Does it stop sweat?

No. Deodorants address odor. Antiperspirants reduce sweat and are regulated drugs that work with aluminum salts. This is the first kind.

Is there baking soda in it?

    Absolutely None.

    Is it safe for kids?

It's the reason it exists. Eleven ingredients, no aluminum, no baking soda. Try a small area first, as with anything new.

Do I have to detox first?

No. There is no such thing. If you're coming off an antiperspirant you may notice a few weeks of adjustment, which passes on its own.

What if it isn't for me?

Tell us and we'll make it right. That's a small brand's whole advantage.

Take off the day. Keep the softness.

Deodorant. Where every ingredient earns its place.
